Description:

The Al-Kitaab series focuses on the story of Maha and Khalid Abu el-‘Ila and their extended family, and vocabulary lessons in each chapter are based around their story. Various bits of cultural information is included in each chapter, and grammar lessons are also included. The series uses a technique known as spiraling, meaning that they show a grammatical concept without formally introducing it until later. An example of this is introducing the word ???? as ‘father’ and ????? as ‘my father’ as two separate words in the vocabulary list in chapter one, leaving it up to the students to deduce that the ? at the end indicates first person possession; the actual grammatical lesson that deals with this information is presented in chapter three. The textbook also includes an audio/visual CD with recordings in MSA, Egyptian, and Levantine dialect as well as videos, vocabulary lists, and drills.

Some big changes in the third edition are the inclusion of both Egyptian (Cairene) and Levantine (Damascene) dialects in the vocabulary lists, adding the story that Nisreen and Tariq al-Nuuri told in Levantine dialect, a new interactive website, formatting of the CD to make audio and video recordings more accessible to MP3 players, and a separate teacher’s edition that includes the answer key in the back.
