This is a lesson plan that teachers can use to introduce their students to square Kufic designs. The lesson plan is geared towards upper elementary students; nonetheless, it can be easily modified for students of any age level so long as they have some basic Arabic reading abilities. Younger students, however, may not be able to understand all the cultural implications surrounding Arabic calligraphy and square Kufic designs.
The lesson spans a few classes, during which students will:
- Become familiar with various styles of Arabic calligraphy
- Write their names in sqaure Kufic script
- Read and analyze various square Kufic designs
- Create their own square Kufic design
