This unit includes 5 lessons about Muslim women and soccer and the role of sport in modern Middle Eastern society. The first lesson considers the role of sport in society broadly, and speaks about Muslim women athletes and the hijab. The second lesson delves into the controversy over the hijab in sports by looking at the impact of the FIFA headscarf ban on soccer players in Iran. Lessons 3 and 4 continue the discussion of the headscarf ban and Iran through a screening of the film Offside (2006). The final lesson in this unit examines how soccer can and has been used to promote peace. These five lessons can be used as a unit or as stand alone lessons. >
