Description:

Political and social movements in the Middle East and North Africa are often framed through a Eurocentric lens that highlights the effects of these movements on external affairs. The lessons in this unit aim to provide students with a historical context through which to understand political and social protest in the region that challenge frequent connection between protests in MENA and ‘Muslim rage.’ Furthermore, these lessons illustrate the roles that ordinary citizens have played in shaping political and social movements throughout the region. >
