هذا الكتاب الذي يعرض تحليل بنيوي ودراسة متأنية للغة العربية الفصحى المعاصرة من منظور نظري، يحاول أن يشرح المبادئ التي يقوم عليها علم الأصوات وعلم الصرف والنحو ونص الكتابة وقواعد اللغة العربية الفصحى المعاصرة. يبدأ الكتاب بمقدمة تضئ مسيرة تطور اللغة منذ القرن الخامس والسادس الميلادي وحتى القرن التاسع عشر. ومن ثمّ يعرض المؤلف إلى توصيف المنطق الذي تتأسس عليه البنية اللغوية، والتأمل في تطور المعجم اللغوي مع إبداء بعض الملاحظات على الكيفية التي تم بموجيها تباعد الشقة بين اللغة الفصحى الحديثة واللغة العربية الكلاسيكية.
A structural analysis and careful examination of Modern Standard Arabic from a theoretical standpoint, this book explains the principles underlying the phonology, morphology, syntax, script, and grammar of modern written Arabic. An introduction to the development of the language from the fifth and sixth centuries through the nineteenth century is included. The author goes on to describe the logical structure of the language, to consider the development of the lexicon, and to comment on how the language has diverged from the Classical.
