Haifa Al-Mansour’s film, which is the first feature film directed by a Saudi woman and the first shot completely in Saudi Arabia, tells the story of a rebellious ten year old girl named Wadjda. Refusing to accept the idea that girls can’t ride bikes, she attempts to win enough money to buy one by entering a Koran recitation competition at school. Wadjda’s relationship with her mother and friends, as well as her struggles against the surrounding environment, all come alive in this charming, touching film.
