Anytime Activities – Language Games provides instructions on how to create effective language-learning games to practice vocabulary and grammatical concepts. These games can be customized to fit the particular needs of teachers, and aim to utilize the “motivating force of competition” to create a positive and fun learning atmosphere. Through reviewing vocabulary via activities that engage high school students at an age-appropriate level, these 5-20 minute activities can be used as practice, or as basic review, throughout the entire school year. Made possible through a grant from Qatar Foundation International, Arabic Teaching Resources is a website that focuses on providing classroom material and resources to the high school Arabic teaching community, as well as professional development resources for other teachers and administrators. The site’s resources aim to connect students to the Arabic language through “classroom-tested” methods utilized by several experienced teachers of Arabic in English-speaking learning environments.
The “Activities and Resources” section of this website caters to first year Arabic language learning at the high school level. Organized thematically over the course of eight units and supplementary material, the section’s resources and activities introduce students to spoken Levantine Arabic, as well as elements of Modern Standard Arabic. According to the website, all unit activities are tied to one or more of the National Standards for Foreign Language Education (“the 5 Cs”) “to assist teachers in planning effective effective courses that prepare their students to actively engage in intercultural communication.”
Some of the instructions appear to be geared toward teachers of Spanish, but shouldn’t alter the relevance of the game to teachers of Arabic. It may be worth pointing out to the website owners that some of the instructions are written for teachers of Spanish.
