Description:

Abderrahmane Sissako’s film Timbuktu challenges our monolithic view of religious extremism by presenting the experience of a village in Africa taken over by a small group of Islamic militants. This film shows not only how the residents navigate the new restrictions on their lives, but also how the militants are just as flawed and human individuals. This resource from the Carnegie Council provides background on the film, questions for discussion, and links to relevant resources. >
