This five lesson unit based on Common Core State Standards introduces students to the golden age of Islamic civilization, its geographic and historical, its achievements, scope and impact. The first lesson, the History of the Abbasid and Umayyad Dynasties, asks students to create a timeline that compares these two Islamic dynasties. Lessons two and three explore the geographical expansion of the dynasties and the human-environment interaction within them, with an emphasis on two historic cities, Baghdad and Cordoba. The fourth lesson uses a picture book to understand the House of Wisdom and the role of the Islamic empire in circulating knowledge throuhgout the world. The final lesson uses primary sources to analyze the accomplishments of the empire. >
