Description:

This suggested plan of instruction addresses the impact and responses to the attack on the office of the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo and the subsequent, violent resolution of the hostage situation at a delicatessen in Paris days later. It challenges students to consider how to balance responses to violent extremism and free speech with a variety of news and opinion pieces following these events. It includes potential for a structured debate on whether news organizations should reprint the Charlie Hebdo cartoons of Muhammad in light of the attack. This set of activities also raises questions about the experience of Muslims in Europe. >
