يتخلل الدين الإسلامي الثقافات والمجتمعات العربية بصورة واسعة الأثر، ويتجلّى في صور متعددة يمكن ملاحظتها على المستوي المؤسسي وفي أنماط السلوك الفردي والتواصل بين الناس، ويتجلّى ذلك في خيارات اللبس، وروتين الحياة اليومي، وانماط الخطاب الشخصي. ورغماً عن وجود الدين في كل شيء، إلاّ أن الطريقة التي يفهم بها الأفراد الدين ويمارسونه تختلف اختلافاً كبيراً. علاوة على ذلك، نجد أن الإسلام هو الديانة السائدة في الإقليم، ورغماً عن ذلك تنتشر المشاعر الدينية المختلفة على نطاق واسع في الإقليم وتعكس ديانات أخرى تمارس شعائرها في كافة أنحاء العالم العربي. تهدف هذه الوحدة إلى إرشاد الطلاب إلى فهم وضع الدين في العالم العربي في السياق الثقافي الخاص به. وتحاول الوحدة الدراسية حفز الطلاب على التفكّر في التعقيدات المتعلقة بالدين والتعبير عن المعتقد الديني في إقليم لا مناص من الاعتراف بأهمية الدين بالنسبة لمجتمعاته. تعرض هذه الوحدة العديد من الممارسات الدينية والتعبير عن المعتقد الديني الإسلامي والعلاقة بين مختلف الطوائف التي تمارس شعائرها المختلفة في الإقليم.
Religion permeates through the cultures and societies of the Arab world, manifesting itself in diverse ways. Its presence is seen at an institutional level as well as in personal behaviors and interactions including dress, daily routines, and patterns of speech. Although religion is ubiquitous, the way individuals understand and practice their religion varies widely. Furthermore, while Islam is the predominant religion of the region, religious sentiment pervades broadly and a host of other religions are practiced throughout the region. This unit guides students through an understanding of religion in the Arab world within its own cultural context. It challenges students to consider the complexities of religion and religious expression in a region in which its presence is unavoidable. This unit exposes students to diverse religious practices and expressions of Islam and the relationships between religious practitioners in the region.
