Researcher Edward William Lane spent more than 30 years working on this lexicon and it shows in its incredible attention to detail and exhaustive entries. Unfortunately he passed away before he could finish the section on the ?, but subsequent researchers and linguists have pieced together Lane’s notes, as well as added a few of their own, to complete the dictionary through the entire alphabet.
The dictionary is based on the root system. There is no way to type in a specific word; one must use the list of letters on the side and then the appropriate page heading where the word will be found. Therefore, knowledge of the Arabic alphabet as well as the root and measures system is necessary before using this dictionary.
Although its main use is for classical and medieval Arabic texts, it is also occasionally if but rarely appropriate for modern texts such as those by Naguib Mahfouz. >
