يستهدف هذا الكتاب الدارسين الذين سبق لهم تعلّم إحدى اللهجتين الشامية أو المصرية ويرغبون في تطوير معرفتهم باللغة العربية عن طريق تعلّم اللهجة الأخرى. يركز هذا الكتاب المنهجي على النطق وقواعد اللغة والمفردات والتواصل الاجتماعي عبر اللغة العربية، ويقارن الاختلاف والتشابه الموجود في السمات الأساسية في اللهجتين قيد الدراسة.والغرض من وراء ذلك هو توضيح جوانب التطابق و الاتفاق في اللهجتين، خصوصاً تلك الجوانب التي لايتوقع القارئ أن تكون متطابقة في اللهجتين. الكتاب موجز ويشتمل على خمسة دروس وملحق يحتوي على قائمة المفردات والمصطلحات الخاصة والمفردات التي تختلف من لهجة إلى الأخرى. لا يحتاج استخدام الكتاب إلى معرفة مسبقة بالأبجدية العربية إذ يعتمد الكتاب على نسخ اللغة العربية بالحروف الإنجليزية إضافة للرموز المستخدمة لتمثيل الحروف العربية التي ليس لها مقابل في الإنجليزية.
Levantine and Egyptian Arabic is designed for those who have learned one of the two mentioned dialects, and want to expand their knowledge to the second. The textbooks focuses on pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and social usages, and compares the differences and similarities that exist among the key features for both dialects. The goal is to point out areas where there is correspondence, or agreement, between these two dialects, even in areas where readers might not first expect to find it. The textbook is brief, consisting of 5 lessons, and an appendix that includes a glossary, special terms, and words that can vary within the dialect. No knowledge of the Arabic alphabet is required, as the text relies on transliteration.
