Description:

This fascinating exhibit by the Smithsonian Museum of African Art and the Fowler Museum at UCLA juxtaposes a wide variety of writing systems in African art and daily life, much of it contemporary. This is a great opportunity to compare the use of Arabic script calligraphy with those in other language systems–a fascinating reminder that Islamic art is not the only aesthetic that celebrates the word. The Word Play section is particularly interesting, as are the educational materials on exploring scripts and symbols. >
